I would hereby like to inform you
That I just successfully used the word “pinyin” while playing scrabble and got 22 points out of it, giving me a 30 point lead over both of my parents.

Since I've started sentence-mining Sherlock...
It’s amazing, the difference it makes. Before I would just get all these arbitrary sentences with useful vocabulary and review them, and it was a bit like how your parents told you to eat vegetables when you were younger, except you were a very mature child and found a way to like them and dutifully shoved them down your throat because you knew that you needed nutrients.
Um.
Anyway, it...

Ahh, you know that Polyglot Chrome extension I just reblogged that looks all wonderful?
It doesn’t seem to be working for me. Is anyone else having problems?
An Awesome Chrome Extension for People Studying... →
vowelsme:
If you use Chrome (and you should, because it’s awesome) and are learning a foreign language, you should definitely install this extension. What does it do?
Polyglot [the name of the extension] translates randomly selected words on the sites you visit into a language of your choice, allowing you to learn and practice foreign vocabulary while you browse the Internet.
So if you’re...
Oh, dear.
Apparently, I need to get a new passport. Really soon. My current one expires this September, and EIL won’t accept it.
I just hope that they’ll…you know…temporarily accept it, because that’s part of the final application and the final application is due in a week or two, no exceptions.
…And hopefully, this time I won’t come out looking like an egg with...

reversebladesword:
I’m feeling a little bit sick today, so today I will offer you guys some useful resources to the Japanese language.
Japanese is a hard language and I frequently need to look up grammar rules, sentence patterns, or kanji. It may seem like I pull all of this straight from my head, but 80% of the…

Oh hi, wall in my room in which this ridiculously huge poster is currently hanging.
You can imagine my dad’s face when I told him I wanted to spend 35 bucks on a giant laminated poster with a bunch of Asian squiggles on it.

FURIGANA, GUYS.
I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: one of the best and funnest ways to improve your Japanese is to sing along with songs while reading the Japanese lyrics. And this site just made it a whole lot easier, and a whole lot more effective.
(Bonus points if you know that song!)
You can also change the size of the text, and turn the furigana on and off. And, they seem...
athenasalem asked: Oh, also, where in Japan are you going to? I'll be studying in Nagoya all next year : )
smelltheraine asked: Can I ask where you found the japanese dub of Sherlock? And did it have japanese subs as well? I've been using the AJATT method for around 2-3 years now and personally I can't imagine learning a language any other way. Oh and by the way, have you ever tried using lang-8? It's a site I think Khatz talked about a long time ago in one of his posts and I think it's another helpful...

Oh, I’ve thought myself into a panic again. Sometimes this happens.

You know. I love Japanese. A lot. And um, I’ve thought a lot about pursuing it in college, and my family has started looking into it, and everything. Because I’m at that point where people are starting to ask me what I want to pursue in higher education.
Except, I mean, it’s just a language. A...
(Okay, I’m actually going to sleep now. Night, guys!)
zombizombi asked: Wow, congrats on your sentence mining. I've never heard of AJATT before but it seems like an interesting method. Do you think it's working for you well? I feel confused about the SRS business. But it seems like a method I might try since Japanese classes aren't available to me right now! Just wondered if you've reviewed how you feel about AJATT!

So, how’s it going?
You see, I was going to go to sleep. But then I decided to look at those Japanese Sherlock Holmes files I downloaded a while ago for the heck of it. I mean, I didn’t think I could handle the grammar or vocab or anything…Sherlock Holmes is some pretty advanced stuff, right?
Except I can.

I will simply tell them that I understand enough for me to follow the Japanese audiobook of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone reasonably well.
Because I actually can.
For the longest time ever, it was like white noise in the background, another piece of Japanese audio I played whenever. But I realized a few days ago that I can actually understand a lot of it. Granted, I have read the...

Japanese grammar...Well, CLASSICAL Japanese...
I just came across this lovely little site that has information on classical (e.g., really-old-no-one-uses-it-anymore) Japanese grammar! Although it’s not very expansive and hasn’t been updated in ages, it’s still incredibly interesting. I would really like to get my hands on an entire book on the subject!
I just submitted my preliminary application to EIL! Part one of the application process completed.
And um, it’s just started to hit me. You know, the fact that I’m actually going. To Japan. This summer. Wow.
I’M ACTUALLY GOING.

Remember how my dad started leaving me notes in...
Well, he’s decided to have a little bit more fun with it. At my expense.
I came home this evening, carrying god knows how many groceries and freezing cold. The second I walk up to my porch, I see a nice long page of Japanese taped to the door.
「 いづれの御時にか、女御、更衣あまたさぶらひたまひけるなかに、いとやむごとなき際にはあらぬが、すぐれて時めきたまふありけり。」
So I sit there for a five minutes with my iTouch dictionary, but I can’t...

So, apparently, if you get your hands on an iTunes Japan gift card, you can trick iTunes into thinking that you’re Japanese and buy all the music, audiobooks and movies you want.
And, it looks like there are people who’ll get one for you.
I am seriously considering dishing out 100 bucks for two of those 3000 yen cards. And then buying lots of dubbed movies. And lots of...

In the Japanese dub, Watson has a deeper voice than Shyarock Sherlock… I do not know what this means but I am so unsure.
Uploaded for those with a morbid curiosity.
Edit, as it keeps being asked: Sherlock is voiced by Mikami Satoshi (三上哲), whilst Watson is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa (森川智之) who is best known for being the voice of Sephiroth (Final Fantasy 7)

My dad's taken to leaving me notes around the...
Not that he can speak it; he uses google translate. It’s still incredibly amusing, though. I just walked up to my room to find this pasted on my door:
「あなたがシャワーの前にゴミを今夜取ることを忘れないでください。 -パパ」
and when I got home earlier, this was taped to my porch:
「こんにちは!学校はどうでしたか? -パパ」
He never ceases to be amazed when I read them out for him, haha. My dad is the best.
